In 2008, she volunteered as an Individual Augmentee (IA) in Afghanistan, serving as the Combined Joint Task Force Staff Reconstruction Engineer, managing the development and construction of roads. In July 2007, Nigro was assigned to the Program Executive Office (PEO) Space Systems PMW-146 to work on the MUOS Test and Evaluation Team. During this tour she worked as the Littoral Combat Ship C4ISR Project officer and the Joint Maritime Assault Craft (JMAC) communication project manager. After receiving her degree, she reported to SPAWAR Systems Center San Diego for her EDO qualification. Nigro reported to her first surface ship, USS O’BANNON (DD 987) in May 2000 where she served as the Strike Officer and Weapons officer, and later that year was designated as an engineering duty officer (EDO) and transferred to the Naval Post Graduate School where she earned her Master of Science degree in space systems engineering. In June 1999, Nigro reported to Naval Academy Preparatory School, where she served as a volleyball and basketball coach in conjunction with teaching algebra while waiting to attend Surface Warfare Officer School. NIWC Atlantic is a Navy engineering and technology command, and in her role, Nigro oversees the full-spectrum research and development, test and evaluation, engineering design, development and fleet support across the complete Information Warfare domain.Ī native of Duluth, Minnesota, Nigro received her commission as an ensign upon graduating the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering in May 1999.
